Although significantly smaller than its larger counterparts, Missouri faces a nursing shortage as well. The current nursing shortage as we know it sweeps the nation like a plague, and it’s affecting the quality of health care in our very own “Show Me State.” In fact, statistics predict that Missouri is three times as likely to suffer from a shortage increase compared to the rest of the nation.

There are a few important factors contributing to this shortage, and for the problem to resolve, those factors have to be addressed immediately. The biggest factor is a shortage of nursing programs and nursing educators. As a result, 79 of its countries fall short of meeting federal guidelines.

To meet the state’s demand for higher quality health care, Missouri needs to find and hire professional clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, and nurse-midwives. Like some of the other states which share its geographic make-up, Montana’s rural nature limits access to key health care provisions, making its current nursing shortage an even more dire situation. The state simply doesn’t have enough physician assistants and nurse practitioners to work in geographically-challenged areas. But the state additionally faces another significant cause of nursing shortage: a veteran workforce.

Although veteran nurses are currently employed, upcoming retirement opportunities will require qualified professionals to replace them. In just 20 years, the state will have to make do with only 75% of the required nursing work force if it doesn’t both produce and attract enough nursing professionals. Making matters worse is the state’s lack of sufficient BSN nursing programs which again, is additionally a factor of geographical restraints.

Fortunately, there’s a way to get around those geographical restraints online through an Internet based BSN nursing program. RNs with BSN at least have more opportunities than those without.
