BSN stands for Bachelor’s In Nursing Degree and it indicates a nurse is capable of performing supervisory, decision-making jobs in hospitals, nursing homes, home health services and doctor’s offices. To prepare, BSN students attend nursing school for 4 years. The first half of a BSN program is generally filled with basic college requirements (math, english, social studies, etc.) while the last half is filled with nursing science and nursing principles. For this reason, many nursing students take the first half of a BSN program online since the latter half is best served in a brick and mortar type of establishment since it focuses on actual (read, physical) clinical work.
There are 5 different types of BSN programs:
· BSN. Prepares nursing students for research, teaching, and developing into certified nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) and certified nurse midwives (CNMs), and nurse practitioners (NPs).
· LPN-to-BSN. Helps current licensed practicing nurses (LPNs) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) evolve into BSN health care providers.
· RN-to-BSN. Moves nurses who are already registered, licensed, and working, into a higher-earning BSN position.
· Second Degree BSN. Specific to individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in a non-related field, switch careers over to nursing.
· Accelerated Degree BSN. Similar to the second degree BSN, the accelerated degree BSN program reduces the typical 4 year BSN program to a condensed, faster-paced 1 year program.
