Of the 50 states, Alaska has the worst nursing shortage of all and the current situation shows no sign of improvement. The northern and southwest areas of the state compare miserably when examined in relation to the entire world. What’s behind the shortage?

Alaska’s growing aging population increases the need for more nurses. There’s that and the fact that aging relatives continue to migrate to the state. Alaska’s topography make matters worse since it can physically inhibit access to critical Alaska Nursing Programs. And the state suffers from an insufficient number of nurse educators and adequate Alaska nursing schools as well. These problems only exemplify why accredited online LPN and RN/BSN nursing programs are a viable solution to Alaska’s nursing problems.

Although the state needs BSN prepared nurses, clinical nurse specialists, home health nurses, nurse anesthetists, Nurse Educators, nurse practitioners, and nurse-midwives, RNs with a bachelor’s degree (BSN) have more job opportunities than those without. In fact, many of the state’s healthcare agencies require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.

Number of Alaska nursing jobs today: 3,275 RPNs
Projected number of Alaska nurses needed: 6,822 RPNs by 2020
