A rapidly growing state is generally a good thing. Problems occur when that growth affects a state’s quality of health care. Arizona, one of the nation’s fastest growing states, is currently suffering from such an inability to keep up with a growing demand for nurses. With current nurses nearing retirement or simply leaving the industry, the state is in dire need of qualified professionals willing to service new hospitals.

Another reason why the state needs more nurses is its location. Arizona is one of the most traveled states during the winter months, making it one of the most employable states in the nation all year round. Add in a pleasing climate and an affordable lifestyle, you not only have an environment that attracts a large populace in need of health care; you additionally have an environment that needs individuals who can provide health care services.

To ensure a safe living environment, many of the state’s healthcare agencies require nurses to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Fortunately, it’s easier to get a BSN than ever before with multiple opportunities to earn this type of degree offline and online. You have your choice among baccalaureate, graduate degrees, post-graduate degrees, and professional/certificate programs.

Number of Arizona nursing jobs today: 33,030 RPNs
Projected number of Arizona nurses needed: 49,348 RPNs by 2015

Employment Opportunities

It’s important to remember that experience, education, specialty, facility, and location strongly influence nursing opportunities in Arizona. Almost 90% of the state’s nurses successfully find employment in urban or metropolitan areas. Phoenix for example, Arizona’s largest metropolitan area, has an extremely high demand for nurses.
