Compared to the national average, Colorado suffered from a nursing shortage twice as much prior to the current recession. And predicted retirements within the field increase the shortage over 25%. Worsening the problem is a lack of sufficient nurse educators.
Without proper educational opportunities, the state will continue to fall short of an adequate number of qualified nurses — especially since this rapidly growing state is projected to increase its population by 1.5 million additional residents in just ten years.

There can be no question surrounding the severity of the state’s need for qualified nursing professionals. Use the current situation as an opportunity to work in what’s slated to be an extremely lucrative field once the economy rebounds.
Number of Colorado nursing jobs today: 31,432 RPNs
Projected number of Colorado nurses needed: 42,159 RPNs by 2015
RNs lacking a degree can still find gainful nursing employment by working in heavily populated areas like Denver and Boulder. In those two cities alone, an RN can earn between $57,000 and $69,000 a year. Nurses with an extensive education, experience, and specific expertise however, can earn much more.
Nursing Assistant: $25,193 – $30,669
Licensed Practical Nurse: $35,575 – $45,278
RN Staff Nurse: $58,741 – $71,293
Nurse Practitioner: $79,785 – $94,043
