When it comes to nursing shortages and compromised health care, Maine may be the worst hit state. The state is mostly rural, making access to nursing opportunities a bit harder than in other states. And then there’s the additional problem of an aging health care staff and an aging patient base.

It won’t be long before veteran nurses leave the industry to retire, and statistics predict over five thousand replacements will be needed over the next 15 years. What’s really frightening is that one fourth of the state’s residents live in areas where nurse shortage is evident.
What can you do to help? Enroll in an online LPN, RN, BSN, or MS nursing program. Many of the state’s health facilities have become “BSN preferred” preferred facilities. If you don’t have at least a BSN, your opportunities as a working nurse in this state may be limited.
