Our current economic situation won’t last forever. At some point, the economy will bounce back and encourage nurses nearing retirement to finally abandon current positions once and for all. When that happens, Maryland, like the majority of other states in the nation, will face an insurmountable nursing shortage unless it can hire qualified replacements.

Maryland unfortunately faces another problem that’s equally daunting. The state suffers from a nurse educator shortage as well, and it too will worsen as veteran nurses leave the workforce upon retirement. In both the nurse education and practice industries, we’re looking at huge numbers of potential loss. 10,000 in fact, in just under ten years. Take a look at the following stats:

• Licensed Practical Nurse: $37,292 – $44,937
