North Carolina needs more nurses to care for its veteran population. The state is under a literal shortage while demand for increased health care is on the rise in some of the state’s most critical areas: emergency and operating rooms.

Contributing to the problem is North Carolina’s rapidly aging population and a nursing workforce that’s either returning from retirement or literally working on the brink of retirement. The veteran nurse force just isn’t stable enough to provide adequate long-term health care, and the state expects a sharp drop in its current nursing workforce in just five years.

In 2015, current veteran nurses nearing retirement will leave, and nurses who’ve returned from retirement will retire one last time. This is of course, assuming the economy will rebound — a feat that most economists predict will happen with certainty. Five years following that particular turning point is when North Carolina’s elderly population will increase two-fold. Unless the state can generate and attract enough qualified nurses, it won’t be able to properly care for the influx.

As you can imagine, preparing the state for the onslaught of health care demands is the state’s top priority. Fortunately, the opportunities for meeting these demands is highly feasible with an online nursing program. Get your BSN online and position yourself as a highly paid North Carolina health care employee.
