A litany of research work suggests that the basic tenet of South Carolina’s predicted nursing shortage is authentic and well established. If left to develop, this shortage will affect the way the state delivers health care to all its citizens. The problem with that delivery is the fact that the state’s elderly patient base, one of the country’s fastest growing sectors of the population, may not get the type of health care that it needs.

South Carolina’s rural areas will be the hardest hit areas unless the state can adequately fulfill a growing demand. Without a diligent effort, the potential for the nursing shortage is simply unlimited.
In just 10 years, the state will be short 15,000 BSN prepared nurses, clinical nurse specialists, home health nurses, nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, and nurse-midwives. That’s 18% of a workforce required to maintain a sustainable health industry.
Fortunately, the state is aggressively working toward a solution. The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation has $1.5 million available in nursing scholarships for nurses who will teach in a nursing program for just 3 years. It’s also aggressively employing BSN nurses who’ve attended an online nursing program. Enroll today and help prevent a statewide epidemic.
