South Dakota is part of a multi-state health industry that includes Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana. With such a large patient base, it’s in the worst position to suffer from a nursing shortage, yet that’s just what the state is facing. The current nursing shortage that’s sweeping the entire country rests on many factors, and South Dakota isn’t immune to a single one of them.

What factors?

An aging patient base and an aging nurse faculty are two of the most influential. Aging patients are on the rise in this state, and they create a strain on a faculty that’s either nearing retirement or returning to work from retirement. When the economy recovers, South Dakota’s veteran nurses, like so many veteran nurses across the country, will abandon their current positions and create a significant gap in the patient-to-nurse ratio.

Thanks to technological advances, the current nursing shortage can be reduced. You can enroll in a BSN nursing program and find a nursing job right when the shortage will be at its peak. It’s increasingly apparent that the nursing shortage will contribute to an overall health care shortage, but it’s equally important to understand its facilitation can be reduced with your participation. Without it, we’re left to anticipate it may evolve more than ever.
